What a (Casino) Night!

With only two weeks to organize and market the event, the students in Dr. Vallen’s Casino Gaming and Management class pulled off and executed an exciting night of gaming and entertainment during NAU’s Family Weekend.

A pleased Dr. Vallen commented, "Our 23rd annual Family Weekend Casino Night was a tremendous success. While last year saw roughly 1,100 guests in attendance, our 2016 event sold almost 1,200 tickets (1,176 tickets). This meant more chips being purchased, more raffle tickets bought, more Split-the-Pot tickets sold, and more guests bidding for Live and Silent Auction items. The net result? One of our most successful years ever! With better than $37,000 in net profits, we have now reached three critical milestones. Over the past 23 years we have raised over $700,000, given away better than $250,000 in scholarships, and still have more than $460,000 within the NAU Foundation dedicated to Casino Night.

And we couldn't have done it without all those dedicated students from the HA 477 Casino Gaming Management classes over these many years!"

"Casino Night was an amazing event, not only for the guests, but for us as a team. We were able to gain first-hand experience on what it takes to put together an event of this scale, overcoming challenges and putting into practice what we learned in the course of our studies."

"Marketing for Casino Night was an overall success and a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Having 1176 attendees is the second highest attendance on record, a number we can all be proud of, and a credit to this event. Casino Night continues to improve with the commitment displayed from everyone involved including [Professor Vallen], the students, volunteers, and the parents. An honor to represent the School of Hotel & Restaurant Management at Northern Arizona University!"
~ Matthew Milne, the Marketing Team

"A great success every year, and worth the time and effort put into the process."
~ Danielle Dollar, the Cashier Team

“Casino Night went really well. We had some extra soda and waters left over from the donations but besides that everything else went smoothly.”
~ Jenn Lewis, the Food & Beverage Team

"As the Human Resources team, we thoroughly enjoyed working with student volunteers. It was also a pleasure to put on a fun night for their parents and other supporting parties! HRM's 23rd annual Casino Night was a blast!"
~ Tyler Straight, the Human Resources Team

"Overall, I believe that the auction team was very successful this year. Throughout the chaos of setting up such a large event in such a short amount of time, we all pulled together to have our area run smoothly. This was an excellent learning experience for our entire team, especially since it was half composed of international students."
~ Brett Zornes, the Auction Team
