Three Professors Phase In Their Retirement

Three of SHRM’s professors will be participating in a phased retirement plan over the next three years. Beginning this fall, Associate Professors Dr. Jon Hales and Dr. Paul Wiener will be taking off alternating semesters to slowly ease into retirement while Dr. Rich Howey will continue teaching each semester, but with a smaller course load. Hales will be gone in the fall, then returning for the spring 2016 semester while Wiener takes a break and vice versa.

Prior to teaching at NAU, they both worked in the hotel and restaurant industry for over 20 years.

“I don’t want to leave, but it’s time,” Hales said. “Everyone decides when they are done, and I’ve been working for 45 years so it’s time. It’s a nice option to turn it over to newer professors.”

SoYeon Jung, assistant professor, has been hired to take over some of their classes and eventually will be the new full-time instructor for them.

In the meantime, Hales and Wiener will get to recharge during their semesters off.

“I expect to be ready to teach again in the spring of 2016,” Hales said.

“I have some extensive travel plans with my wife [during the spring],” Wiener said. “The nice aspect of phased retirement is that faculty can choose to retire earlier [than they would otherwise] if they want. This is a different phase in my life and no amount of planning can guarantee what will happen.”

Howey is easing in to retirement by teaching only one course in the fall 2015 semester and then two in spring 2016. He’s also been at NAU for over 20 years.

“It’s been a good run, but it’s time to get new people in,” he said.

He’s still not entirely sure what he will do after retirement either, but has thought about returning to the Pacific Northwest region.

“I do know that I will not be a store greeter,” he said with confidence.

No matter where they end up at the end of the three years, SHRM will miss these professors and wish them luck.
