Sharing Wisdom with Fountain Hills High School Students
On Friday, April 24, 2015, Introduction to Hospitality Management students at Fountain Hills High School (FHHS) in Fountain Hills, Ariz. visited NAU to hear from a panel of students. Dr. Wanda Costen also spoke to them about the Hotel and Restaurant Management program here. Claire McWilliams, Hotel and Restaurant Management teacher and NAU alum ('95 HRM), brought her dual enrollment students to hear from NAU students on their experiences. Kathleen King, lecturer, gathered volunteers from the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH), student ambassadors and other groups who donated their time to answer questions from the high school students.
“They thought the [SHRM] students were enthusiastic and willing to tell it like it is,” McWilliams said, “and they loved seeing one of their own [2013 FHHS graduate Haven Lewis] on the panel.”
McWilliams' high school students are earning credit with Scottsdale Community College so by the time they graduate they’ll already have some college credit to go towards an HRM degree. She’s made sure that the classes she teach align with HA 100 here at NAU to create a solid foundation in hospitality.
This is an annual visit that's planned by McWilliams and King each spring to give FHHS students a tour of NAU. They appreciated hearing Dr. Costen’s advice on finding scholarships and choosing the college that’s right for them as well as being able to learn first-hand what it's like to be a student in NAU's SHRM.
