Northern Arizona University hosts many different kinds of workshops and events. This June from the 14th to the 20th NAU will host The Andy Harvey Native American Broadcast Journalism Workshop for the 4th time. What makes this workshop unique is that high school students in junior and senior year will be on the NAU campus gaining this experience. Paul Helford, the executive producer and administrator of the workshop, brought Communication/Journalism professor Toni DeAztlan-Smith into the team to mix things up and bring new life into the workshop.

The week-long workshop allows these lucky students to stay at NAU in Allen Hall on campus where they will learn about news operations, shadow NAZ Today reporters, and create their own mock show with stories produced by the students themselves.

“I have planned a series of tutorials on camera operation, news writing, radio announcing, video editing, studio production, and reporting/anchoring news,” DeAztlan-Smith said. “Students will also shadow NAU students and staff as they produce live nightly news shows.”

Students have guest lectures at the workshop and during one of the weekdays, they take a field trip to Phoenix to visit KPNX, KTAR, and the Heard Museum where the students will meet professionals and learn about their work. According to DeAztlan-Smith, “it will be a real-world, experiential learning opportunity that I think will wow the students and hopefully develop an interest in broadcast news.”

All Arizona high school students are eligible to apply. With only twenty spots available the race is on for a spot. Students are required to submit an essay on why they want to be selected, and pay a $50 application fee to be considered.

The workshop is given in memory of Andy Harvey, an accomplished Native American in the broadcast journalism world. The hope is that it will inspire students to attend college and pursue a career in journalism or media.

The workshop itself is an informative and once in a lifetime experience for these high school students.
