Meeting Employers Inside Our Walls
By Megan Dressler, Student Writer
The FCB Business Division held its Career Exploration Day on October 2, 2014 as part of Career Week. A record 94 companies registered, including more than 30 new employers to Career Exploration Day. Approximately 500 students took advantage of this networking opportunity.
Employers from a diverse collection of fields including technology, retail, financial institutions, and public utilities, among others, were impressed with the preparedness of the FCB students and with how professionally they were dressed. Dr. Ron Smith, director of the Career Development Office, described the mood during the event as “electric.” With how busy the event was and how willing students were to meet employers, it’s easy to see how it would be. Student Courtney Newman commented, “It was nice to be able to speak with a wide variety of people and gain an insight into many careers.” As a direct result of the Career Exploration Day, more than 230 students have had on-campus interviews and multiple job offers have been extended.
NAU’s School of Hotel and Restaurant Management held its Hospitality Career Fair on October 1, 2014. Thirty-eight employers and three educational booths drew students through the halls. There were many notable companies on hand, for example, Marriott, Four Seasons, DoubleTree by Hilton, Pappas Restaurants, Panda Express, and Café Zupas.
The event was attended by more than 300 students. More than 100 interviews occurred for close to 100 career/internship opportunities. The event was so large that a dozen faculty and staff members generously donated the use of their offices as interview spaces.
Putting together the event was a group effort that provided several SHRM students with an event-planning opportunity. It took hard work but the result was a student-focused and well-executed, successful career development event. Student Amy Edgerton offered, “So many great employers and opportunities stem from this fair. It is an amazing resource for SHRM students, and I believe one of the best on campus.”
