Marriott Demonstration Kitchen Dedication
On April 12, 2013, the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at Northern Arizona University held the unveiling ceremony for the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Demonstration Kitchen in recognition of the generous J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation contributions to the HRM program. This was the third major contribution from Marriott since the school was established in 1987.
Representing Marriott at this event were General Manager and Area Vice President Steve Hart of the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa; Director Karen Vallecillo of Human Resources at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge; Marriott Vice President Brian Cammack of Human Resources; and Marriott Manager of University Relations and Talent Acquisition Carrie Feeney. Former NAU President Gene Hughes who is responsible for beginning the HRM program in 1985 was also in attendance. Associate Professor Jon Hales, a 25 year Marriott veteran, was the master of ceremony.
After a short program with comments from Dean Craig Van Slyke of The W. A. Franke College of Business and Mr. Hart, guests were taken on a tour of the new demonstration kitchen. They were treated with the food and colorful vegetable-floral displays prepared by the HRM students under the guidance of Chef Don Carlson. Chef Carlson is retiring after more than 25 years as the executive chef since the School's opening.
The demonstration kitchen was completed in the fall of 2011 and features state-of-the-art kitchen equipment, cooking stations, and the latest in teaching technology that significantly enhances the students' learning experience. We extend our gratitude to the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation for their continued level of support.
This is our 5-video playlist from the event, including a tribute to Chef Don Carlson:
