Costen Inspires Alumni at Phoenix Chapter Event
Dr. Wanda Costen, SHRM executive director, helped kick off the Phoenix Alumni Chapter's Speaker Series on September 21, 2017.
The Phoenix chapter gathered for the evening at the Renaissance Hotel in Downtown Phoenix. The hotel is managed by NAU Alum, Paige Lund ('93) who will be inducted into The W. A. Franke Alumni & Faculty Hall of Fame this year. Several alumni who attended are employees of the hotel, and were happy to show off their workplace to their peers.
Along with Costen, NAU President Rita Cheng was asked to be a speaker for the event. President Cheng graciously welcomed the crowd and was excited to see the amount of alumni who attended the event. She shared her enthusiasm for the speaker series and the accomplishments of former students.
According to the 60+ attendees, Costen left a lasting impression on the crowd with her speech, and instilled the pride of being part of the Lumberjack family. She educated the audience on the beauty of remaining a part of NAU and the community, and showed her own pride in the many successes of the alumni.
When Brianna Lorents, Alumni chapter coordinator, inquired who should be the first speaker, others said that Costen “captures the audience’s attention and get them involved.” They were right.
“She is one of the most impactful, captivating speakers I have ever heard,” shared Lorents.
Tim Hattrick, a former communication student at NAU, also spoke at the event. He shared his story of having it all and losing everything time and time again, while remaining humble and gracious with the opportunities he encountered in his life. His story shared great perspective on how attitude can affect the outcome of any situation.
The event was the first of many to come, with the NAU Alumni Association looking to expand its presence around the country. This new speaker series looks to feature one faculty member and one alumni at every future event.
