Zach Singh ('12 SHRM) uses the sustainability practices he learned in Dr. Claudia Jurowski's HA 380 Global Issues in Hospitality classroom to Keep Phoenix Beautiful.

Singh's organization, Susan G. Komen® Central and Northern Arizona, and the Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure won an award in March 2015 with Keep Phoenix Beautiful as the Non-Profit Partner. Since he joined as Race Manager in June of 2013, Singh has made recycling one of the major priorities of the event. "This past year we were able to divert 53% of our total waste from the landfills, which is around 3 tons!" exclaimed Singh.

“I knew that there were organizations dedicated to sustainability from different case studies that did in class,” he said regarding the partnership with Keep Phoenix Beautiful, “and [I learned] how I could divert waste from the landfill from some other theories that we learned as well.”

It’s always good to see that what’s taught here at NAU can be translated into students’ careers. Based on his success with the recycling program, he plans to incorporate a compost section for food waste at future events.

“It’s great to see that even as a nonprofit we are able to support other important issues like sustainability through some easy additions to events,” he concluded.
