Golf Tournament
NAU’s School of Hotel and Restaurant Management held their 14th annual golf tournament at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort in Phoenix on Monday, April 15, 2013. The tournament, a fundraiser that goes towards scholarships for HRM students, was very successful this year, especially attendance-wise. There were 116 players who participated in this year’s tournament.
The tournament committee, made up of Professors Jon Hales, Darwin Mann, and Wally Rande, worked with several of HRM’s National Advisory Board members to gain over 20 sponsors who donated prizes or money to the cause.
“We were averaging $6,000–$8,000 a year when we played in Flagstaff. Last year, our first year in Phoenix, we went to $17,000, and this year we’re going to be over $28,000 dollars,” Hales said.
A lot of the success of this year’s tournament can be attributed to the level of student involvement.
The students helped to sell raffle tickets, gave mulligans to the golf players, and presented the silent auction items for bid. The silent auction featured a lot of great items and had several bids on each them, an improvement from previous years when attendance wasn’t as high.
“After the tournament, we had over 100 people stay for the awards banquet and silent auction,” Hales said. “That was very nice event [on one of the] patios at Desert Ridge to have players wind down.”
“It was a lot of work because there were a lot more people involved, a lot more details [to keep track of], but we had fun,” he said.
The day was a Win-Win for all involved and for future recipients of the scholarship monies.

Golf Tournament 2012 in Review
On April 23rd, HRM held its Annual Golf Tournament at the J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa in Phoenix. The tournament was immediately followed by an alumni reception where former HRM students could make and renew acquaintances with HRM faculty and staff, fellow alums, and other industry colleagues.
HRM has been hosting this golf tournament for over 20 years. The tournament, which has been held at Forest Highlands in Flagstaff in prior years, was moved to Phoenix this year due to the large number of people who showed interest in the event.
In addition to the website and a number of brochures sent out advertising the tournament, the National Advisory Board did a great deal to inform companies and businesses from the hospitality industry about the event. The Camelback Inn, Desert Marriott, American Valet, and Desert Island Restaurants were just a few industry names that supported and attended the tournament.
The tournament was a huge success, with more than 100 golfers coming out for the event, raising almost $22,000-a record! All proceeds went towards scholarships and funding activities for HRM students.

Squeezing it in under the weather
October skies threatened rain, but we managed to squeeze in most of the tournament before the skies opened. Here’s a little sampler of the wonderful day.
