Jonathan Hales

Professor Hales joined the HRM faculty in the summer of 1995. He has a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University; an MBA in Finance from Arizona State University; and a Bachelors in Economics and Certificate in International Relations from the University of Utah. He also studied one year at the Darden Graduate School of Management at the University of Virginia.

Hales teaches Hospitality Managerial Accounting and authored the textbook for that class in 2008, developed the Hospitality Revenue Management class in 2010, and teaches the Senior Seminar class. He has also taught Hospitality Finance, Resort Management, and Guest Service Management. He is currently the Hospitality Industry Coordinator for the HRM National Advisory Board.

Prior to joining the faculty at NAU, Hales completed a 25 year career in operations with Marriott International. This included 9 years as Assistant Controller and Controller with his last position in accounting as the opening Controller for Marriott’s Ranch Las Palmas Resort in Rancho Mirage, California, the first resort that Marriott built. Operations positions included 6 years as Resident Manager in Houston and Miami and 7 years as General Manager in Tampa and Miami. His last position was General Manager of the 800 room Miami Airport Marriott. He was chairman of the South Florida Marriott Business Council and on the Conventions and Visitors Bureau boards in Tampa and Miami.

While at NAU, he has completed faculty internships from 3 days to 3 weeks with Darden Restaurants, Four Seasons Hotels, Hyatt Hotels, Marriott International, Omni Hotels, and Pappas Restaurants. He has also attended General Manager and Owner Conferences for Hilton Hotels, Intercontinental Hotels, and White Lodging and completed the Smith Travel Research seminar on teaching Revenue Management.

Hales has been actively involved on HRM and University committees. He has served on the HRM Curriculum Committee for 12 years (5 as the chair), served on the FCB Curriculum Committed for 4 years, HRM National Advisory Board for 6 years, and has been involved with the HRM Scholarship Golf Tournament Committee for the last 12 years. He has been on the University Residence Life Committee and the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee for which he was the chair for the 2012–2013 academic year. In 2011 he started the annual hospitality corporate office trips taking from 10-16 HRM students to tour the corporate offices and operations of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts in Toronto (2011); Hyatt Hotels and Resorts in Chicago (2012); Darden Restaurants in Orlando (Spring 2013); and Pappas Restaurants in Houston (Fall 2013).
